The Economic Impact of an Easter Sunday Public Holiday in Tasmania
This report examines the likely economic impact of introducing an Easter Sunday public holiday in Tasmania, the only Australian jurisdiction that does not currently recognise the day as a public holiday. Drawing on independent modelling and evidence from other states, the report finds there is no statistically significant impact on employment where Easter Sunday public holidays have already been introduced. It estimates that additional wage costs would represent less than one per cent of a standard annual pay rise, while the overall economic impact would be minimal and partially offset by increased consumer spending, regional tourism and improved employee wellbeing. The report concludes there are no sound economic reasons for Tasmanian workers to receive lower compensation for working on Easter Sunday than workers elsewhere in Australia.
