McKell Institute & the United States Studies Center convene AUKUS stakeholders to explore NSW’s role
The McKell Institute and the United States Studies Center collaborated in late August on a workshop examining NSW’s role in AUKUS.
The scale of AUKUS Pillar I and II means that all states and territories stand to benefit from the supply-chain opportunities associated with the initiative.
McKell and USSC brought together a room of trade union officials, strategic policy experts, defense industry leaders, and state government officials to consider how NSW can lean into the opportunities AUKUS presents.
The workshop enjoyed bi-partisan representation in NSW, with Minister Stephan Whan and Shadow Minister Natasha McLaren-Jones participating.
The workshop noted that there was little attention being paid to AUKUS at the state level in NSW; that local manufacturers in NSW are often turning away from defense opportunities; and that AUKUS can be a catalyst for high quality, highly paid jobs not just in SA and WA, but across the country.
The workshop will inform an outcomes paper to be co-produced by McKell and USSC.
