The McKell Institute today announced its new CEO.
Michael Buckland joins the McKell Institute from Australia’s largest philanthropic fund, the Paul Ramsay Foundation, where he led policy programs and public affairs to help achieve their mission to break cycles of disadvantage in Australia.
As a former Chief of Staff and Policy Director to NSW Opposition Leaders he brings extensive experience in policy development and government. Michael has a diverse background, having worked for derivatives trading firm, First Prudential Markets, and extensively with trade unions and advocacy campaigns.
Mr Buckland said that he is proud join the McKell Institute as it leads the way in progressive policy in Australia.
“Bold policy reform to our childcare system and moves towards land tax in NSW demonstrate the continued appetite for big ideas pioneered by the McKell Institute.”

Outgoing CEO, Sam Crosby said he is very excited about the appointment. Michael’s expertise across many fields of public policy will be a valuable contribution to the policy debate.
“I know that under Michael’s stewardship the McKell Institute will continue to thrive.”
Michael will start with the McKell Institute in mid-January 2021.
