Supporting Victoria’s future workers

Today’s apprentices are tomorrow’s workforce.

The Victorian Government has today announced new regulations and mental health support aimed at helping apprentices complete their qualifications.

Our 2022 report, Working, learning: supporting Victorian apprentices on the job emphasised the need for state government support to boost completion rates and encourage more people to choose a trade.

Problems with employers stood out as a key reason why apprentices were dropping out, and cases of unpaid wages, bullying and harassment were rising. At the same time, formal complaints to the regulator were in single digits, and most apprentices were unaware of the regulator’s roles and responsibilities.

In partnership with the Victorian Trades Hall Council, we highlighted the need to hold bad employers accountable, to overhaul regulation, and for the government to listen to apprentices.

We’re proud to support apprentices and welcome today’s announcement from Minister for Skills and TAFE Gayle Tierney and Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations Tim Pallas that of all the Victorian Apprenticeship Taskforce recommendations will be accepted and acted upon.
