The Case for a National Portable Long Service Leave Scheme in Australia

This report explores the feasibility of a nationally consistent portable long service leave scheme for Australia. The changing nature of the workforce means that most Australian workers no longer achieve long service leave. This has a negative impact on career-long productivity. By introducing a portable scheme – which means that workers could accrue long service leave irrespective of how frequently they change job – workers in the modern economy are able to achieve the same entitlements as previous generations of Australians.
